Liquid Sealant Usage Tips
Simple Saver Pressure Sensitive Sealant™ (G220 - spray-on) and Simple Saver High Tack™ Sealant (G524 - brush-on) are typically used to seal the fabric liner perimeter edges to the abutting main frames and eave struts.
The temperatures below are recommended for optimum performance of sealant. If sealant is used at temperatures above or below those recommended, properties of the material may change, affecting viscosity, open time and flash (tack) time.
Recommended application temperature for G220: 50˚F – 100˚F
Recommended application temperature for G524: 40˚F – 120˚F
Recommended storage temperature for G220 and G524: 70˚F – 75˚F
Use only in well-ventilated areas. Can cause irritation of nose, throat, and airways if inhaled, and cause irritation in contact with skin. For more information regarding health and other hazards, ask for the G220 or G524 sealant material safety data sheets (MSDS).
Thermal Design Inc. recommends using the G524 Simple Saver High Tack™ Sealant (brush-on sealant) for new construction installations where fall protection is to be relied upon with our patented fall protection insulation systems. The reason for this is that spray-on sealants have inherent risks associated with them which could result in an unsafe condition if not used under strict supervision and scrutiny.
Morning dew, condensation, limited water from boots, drizzle, fog, dirt, mud, etc. can contaminate the surfaces. Surfaces should be completely clean and dry during application. Typically the brushed-on solvent based, Simple Saver High Tack™ Sealant will emulsify and mix in with minor surface contamination and still achieve a very good bond. Spray-on sealant goes over the surface of what is there, creating a potential hazard.
Specific requests have been made to use the spray-on G220 Simple Saver Pressure Sensitive Sealant™. This product provides some limited advantages in clear, clean and dry conditions and may be used satisfactorily under the close supervision of the on-site designated OSHA “Competent Person” [29 CFR 1926.32(f)]. Spray-on sealants need to be applied in the proper thicknesses and in suitable clean conditions for an acceptable bond. Testing of the adhesive seal is routinely required to assure that there is an excellent surface bond before reliance on the product for any safety purposes. The suitability for such use is a judgment call of the designated on-site “Competent Person” based upon testing it’s use on site. The Syseal™ fabric must strongly adhere to the upper steel rafter surface and not slide on the surface at all to qualify for safety use.
An OSHA “Competent Person” is defined as “one who is capable of identifying existing and predictable hazards in the surroundings or working conditions which are unsanitary, hazardous, or dangerous to employees, and who has authorization to take prompt corrective measures to eliminate them”. By way of training and/or experience, a competent person is knowledgeable of applicable standards, is capable of identifying workplace hazards relating to the specific operations, and has the authority to correct and work around them.
